MEDIA RELEASE: Resolution Institute Chair shares insider secrets of International Arbitration.

Resolution Institute's 2021 Dispute Resolution Conference

13 July 2021

On 15 July, Russell Thirgood, international arbitrator and Resolution Institute’s chairperson, will chair a panel on international arbitration, a $35 billion industry in Australia with an 80% satisfaction rating. The panel itself will include Hon Patrick Keane AC of the High Court of Australia, as well as Georgia Quick, Professor Janet Walker and Kevin Nash. This panel is part of Resolution Institute’s International Conference on Dispute Resolution, taking place online on Thursday and Friday this week.

“This is an opportunity to understand the thinking of senior practitioners when it comes to effective advocacy,” said Mr Thirgood.

The flexibility, efficiency and enforceability of international arbitration has made it the dispute resolution method of choice for the mature businessperson in recent years. The ongoing courtroom disputes between Gina Reinhart and her family serve as a powerful example of the advantages of arbitrations over public and often bitter courtroom disputes.

“We see that matters that would potentially take 4 months of hearings in a court to resolve could be resolved in a 4-week arbitration hearing,” said Mr Thirgood.

Each panel member also brings a unique perspective to the discussion. Georgia Quick, a partner at law firm Ashurst and President of Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) will discuss the arbitration advocacy, which favours a more direct, less technical approach to litigation advocacy. Kevin Nash, Centre director of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, one of the top international arbitration centres, will provide an international perspective.

The Hon. Patrick Keane and Professor Janet Walker will discuss universal principles of advocacy and the way arbitration rules can be tailored to individual disputes for increased efficiency.

“We have over a century of combined experience on the panel. It is a great opportunity for anyone to learn more about the process of international arbitration and what those who are making the decisions look for when it comes to advocacy,” said Mr Thirgood.
