MEDIA RELEASE: Award-winning Dr. Hanna Jaireth’s work helps resolve farmer disputes peacefully

Wednesday 9 December 2020

Dr. Hanna Jaireth, an advocate for farm debt mediation, has been awarded the Resolution Institute Michael Klug Award for 2020.

She wins the Award for her outstanding work towards providing the New Zealand Government with a comprehensive range of information to support their review of the proposed New Zealand Farm Debt Mediation scheme, leading to the adoption of the Farm Debt Mediation Act (NSW) in New Zealand.

Through the adoption of this Act, her efforts have aided the peaceful settlement of conflicts between farmers and their creditors, offering a measure of relief to an economy burdened by the challenges of COVID-19.

In conferring the Award to Dr. Jaireth, Russell Thirgood, Chair, Resolution Institute, said: “We acknowledge Dr. Jaireth’s tremendous contribution to the adoption of such an important piece of legislation. Her efforts are especially noteworthy in this difficult time, where it is assisting farmers and their creditors find their own resolution to their problems rather than having one imposed upon them. This is exactly the sort of work the Michael Klug Award seeks to champion. Many congratulations to Dr. Jaireth.”

The Resolution Institute Michael Klug Award is presented annually by the Resolution Institute Board to someone who has, in the previous 12 months, contributed towards the peaceful resolution of conflict in the best interests of the community. The Award is made possible through the generosity of Michael Klug AM.
