Workplace Behaviour and Conduct Advisor | The University of Sydney | Darlington campus, Sydney | Full Time

About the opportunity

The Workplace Relations (WR) team plays a critical role within The University of Sydney's Human Resources (HR) function, by providing high-quality workplace relations advice and support to managers, clients, stakeholders, and staff across the university. As a result, they are seeking a consultative Workplace Behaviour and Conduct Advisor to deploy their expertise across the areas of complaints, early intervention, and conduct matters. In this role, you will primarily focus on providing advice on prevention and early resolution strategies on workplace conduct issues. This will entail conducting preliminary assessments of allegations of inappropriate workplace behaviour in accordance with the relevant policies and procedures. Working as part of a HR Centre of Expertise model, you will contribute to education programs, awareness sessions and capability development programs within the HR function.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the HR Partnering Group by providing early resolution advice in relation to interpersonal conflict involving staff and affiliates, to achieve timely and effective outcomes for clients at a local level
  • Triage and conduct preliminary assessments to determine the appropriate next steps for effective resolution, including referral for investigation, where appropriate
  • Participate in and provide advice on facilitating mediated outcomes as part of effective resolution of complaints, where appropriate
  • Provide advice to staff in Faculties, schools, and Professional Staff Units in relation to applicable policy and procedures, including in relation to preliminary assessments, appeals and referral or reporting of matters elsewhere in the University
  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and identification of common issues towards building robust internal processes, training resources/modules or website information.

About you

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in complaints management and resolution most preferably in either the higher education sector or public sector
  • Superior capability in the timely and effective conflict resolution and resolution of staff complaints within a large, complex and/or unionised organisation
  • Well-developed conflict resolution and other alternative dispute resolution skills
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of policies, procedures, and complaint’s framework
  • Ability to operate with tact, diplomacy and professionalism with key internal and external stakeholders including HR staff, lawyers and unions
  • Outstanding written communication and formal documentation skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skill including the ability to apply sound judgement
  • Project/case management skills and experience, including the ability to develop and communicate plans and strategies, and implement through to resolution.

The Senior Advisor, Response and Resolution Pathways plays a pivotal role in realising the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning's (DELWP) commitment to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace. A skilled mediator, facilitator, and coach, with an in-depth understanding of DELWP's employment, equal opportunity and occupational health and safety obligations, this role provides expert advice and support to employees who have experienced inappropriate behaviour at work. This includes assisting them to resolve the matter proactively or triaging the matter for other resolution options, including investigation.

Through analysing data and exploring trends and issues across DELWP, this role also works closely with the Workplace Relations and Investigations, Diversity and Inclusion and Safety and Wellbeing teams, employees and managers, on prevention and early resolution strategies. At its core, this role ensures employees are heard and their concerns addressed in the most effective, productive, safe, and respectful way possible.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in effectively resolving interpersonal conflict
  • In-depth understanding and significant experience in the application of industrial, equal opportunity and occupational health and safety legislation and regulation and the principles of procedural fairness
  • Skilled and experienced mediator, facilitator and/or coach
  • Experience applying a trauma-informed approach to staff who have experienced sexual harassment and other forms of inappropriate behaviour

This is a fixed term position available for a period of 3 years.
