Join the Arbitration and Determinative Special Interest Group for a discussion on domain name arbitration. The speakers, all renowned experts in the field, include Dr Gordon Hughes AM, The Hon. Neil Brown QC and Des Ryan AM. The discussion will cover the following issues:

  • A brief overview of the domain name resolution process
  • How dispute resolution process works for WIPO, ICAAN etc
  • How domain name arbitration process is conducted
  • What constitutes “bad faith” and what is cybersquatting
  • Some interesting cases including, global brands, actors and celebrities

The speakers will also share their experiences and provide unique insights and anecdotes on the challenges with domain name ownership and retention of one's identity on the web.

About the speakers

Dr Gordon Hughes AM is a renowned expert in the area of intellectual property commercialisation, information technology, law, eCommerce, and data protection. He is a principal in the Davies Collison Cave's Litigation and Commercialisation practice. He is a part-time member of the Commonwealth Administrative Appeals Tribunal and a qualified Grade one arbitrator. Dr Hughes has authored and co-authored eight legal texts. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Australian Law Awards in 2004 and was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law in 2011.

The Hon. Neil Brown QC is one of the most prominent arbitrators or panellists on domain name disputes. To date, he has arbitrated 917 disputes, mostly international cases, as a single arbitrator and as member and Chair of three-person panels. He is nominated both by parties and by the institutions in which the cases take place. Neil is also a regular lecturer in Australia and overseas on domain names and has written on the subject extensively, including on his website ( He is an arbitrator and mediator, with a background in government as a Minister and a barrister, who became Queens Counsel in 1980.

Des Ryan AM is a recognised leading lawyer for patent and trademarks. He provides advice and consultancy on intellectual property management, copyright, trade mark infringement, trade mark opposition and unfair competition. He also offers mediation and expert witness services, particularly on intellectual property disputes and adjudication of domain name disputes. Des joined Davies Collison Cave in 1954 and was a partner from 1959 to 2001, before being appointed a consultant.
