About the speakers

Andrew Christie
Chair of Intellectual Property and Director of Studies, Intellectual Property Law – Melbourne Law School, Arbitrator and Mediator

Andrew holds a B Sc and LLB Uni Melb, LLM Uni London and PhD Cambridge. He is a former Fulbright Senior Scholar. He has taught in UK, USA, Singapore and Canada.

Andrew has served on all Australian Government advisory committees on IP. He has been an expert advisor to WIPO on several occasions.

He is a trained arbitrator and mediator and has accepted numerous appointments to resolve IP disputes from WIPO, Resolution Institute, Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre and ICC International Centre for ADR.

He teaches in the Melbourne JD course and the Melbourne Law Masters course.

David Fixler
Partner, Corrs Chambers Westgarth

David is an IP litigator with experience in complex, high profile intellectual property disputes. He has acted across a wide range of sectors and technologies including pharmaceuticals, steel, water filtration and consumer goods.

David has considerable experience advising clients across the full range of IP rights. He helps clients use IP rights to protect their commercial interests and is often called on to develop commercial strategies that address infringement risks.

David is a member of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ) and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI).

William EM Lye OAM QC
Barrister

William was born in Penang, Malaysia. He holds a M Ent Inn (Swinburne), LLM (Monash), LLB and B Sc (Computer Sci). He was appointed QC in 2018.

He practices as a barrister, arbitrator and mediator. He is on the Foreign Arbitrators’ Panel of the Shanghai International Arbitration Centre, Arbitration Association Brunei Darussalam and the Panel of Arbitrators of the Czech Arbitration Centre dealing with disputes under the Uniform Domain Name Disputes Resolution Policy (UDRP) established by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

William is a special seasonal lecturer at Monash Law School, Adjunct Professor Faculty of Business and Law Swinburne and Adjunct Fellow at the Sir Zelman Cowan Centre.

In 2017 William was awarded an OAM for service to the law to business and the promotion of cultural diversity.
