Resolution Institute mourns the passing of Sir Laurence Street

Dear Margaret,

I am writing to you with the very sad news that Sir Laurence Street passed away on 21 June 2018.

Sir Laurence’s stature within the community is known far and wide: Sir Laurence was a former Chief Justice and Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales, a Companion of the Order of Australia, a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George, a Knight of St John and a Grand Officer of Merit of the Order of Malta.  Following his retirement from the Bench Sir Laurence continued his service to the community by leading a range of important public inquiries while engaging as a commercial mediator and arbitrator in a wide-ranging field of disputes. Sir Laurence is credited with conducting over 2500 successful mediations and negotiations.

As dispute resolvers, we particularly appreciate and value Sir Laurence’s extraordinary influence over a period of more than 30 years in gaining the acceptance of ADR by the judicial and wider legal community. As a pioneer in mediation,  Sir Laurence’s booklet Mediation: A Practical Outline distilled the process of mediation and its underlying values and principles for a broad audience. Newly graduated mediators in particular continue to find the Practical Outline a valuable ready reference and many current mediators greatly appreciate the generous mentoring which Sir Laurence gave to so many. As its Patron and Honorary Life Member, Sir Laurence was active in supporting Resolution Institute (formerly LEADR and IAMA) in its mission to increase the widespread use of ADR.

Those of us who knew him personally, remember Sir Laurence for his warmth, his wit and his genuine interest in those around him.

We extend our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Sir Laurence.

Kind regards,

Gary Ulman
