Winners of DR awards announced
Resolution Institute is pleased to announce and pass on our sincere congratulations to Alex Baykitch and Stephen Lancken who were named as the Australian Arbitrator of the Year and Australian Mediator of the Year (respectively).
These awards, made possible by Resolution Institute's sponsorship for the first time in Australia in 2017, are now part of the thirty-four Award categories of the Australasian Law Awards. The inclusion of Arbitrator and Mediator of the Year Awards represents the centrality of dispute resolution in our justice system. Resolution Institute is proud that through its sponsorship, arbitrators and mediators are being publicly recognised alongside legal practitioners for their excellence and achievement in the past 12 months.
The Australian gala event was held on 18 May at The Star Sydney and attracted more than 700 guests mostly from leading law firms and in-house teams. The New Zealand event, at which Resolution Institute has sponsored the Mediator of the Year Award for many years, will be held in November this year.
Nominees for the two awards included many Resolution Institute longstanding members, all of whom are experienced practitioners and make significant contributions to Resolution Institute and to the dispute resolution field.
Resolution Institute members who were finalists for Australian Arbitrator of the Year are:
Alex Baykitch is the President of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) and is a Partner with King & Wood Mallesons in Sydney with over 20 years' experience in cross border litigation and international arbitration.
Angela Bowne SC has practised in a range of fields, in particular, intellectual property, franchising, confidential information, arts and entertainment law, information technology law, and alternative dispute resolution.
Laurie James AM is a Senior Partner at Kott Gunning, practising in both construction and local government law and is the Convenor of the WA Dispute Resolution Association Inc., and the WA Energy Disputes Arbitrator.
Toby Shnookal has extensive experience in disputes that involve complex engineering issues, software disputes, disputes that involve building or engineering technology, and cases that involve complex construction programming and sequencing.
Stephen Walsh QC has practised as a Barrister primarily in alternative dispute resolution processes in all Australian States and Territories. He has practised in most areas of civil law, including commercial, insurance, building and construction, equity, common law, and professional and product liability.
Also nominated was John Wakefield who is the Chairman of Partners, Holman Webb Lawyers in Sydney and practices in dispute resolution, securities enforcement, insolvency, trade practices, insurance and re-insurance, general commercial and equity and international and domestic arbitration.
Resolution Institute members who were finalists for Australian Mediator of the Year are:
Mieke Brandon has over 25 years' experience as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner, mediator and coach. Mieke has published extensively including the seminal text Mediating with Families.
Anne Sutherland-Kelly is a mediator specialising in commercial, anti-discrimination, employment, wills and estate matters and is a mediator on the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Anne is also a leading trainer in mediation skills that are aligned with the National Mediator Accreditation System.
Stephen Lancken is the managing director of Negocio Resolutions, and has over thirty years of experience in litigation, mediation and arbitration. Stephen is also a sought after teacher of mediation, negotiation and people interaction skills.
Alan Limbury runs his own consultancy, Strategic Resolution, in addition to mediating in Europe as an Associate Member of Crown Office Chambers in London. He practised as a Barrister in England and as a litigation lawyer in major Sydney law firms, specialising in intellectual property and competition law.
Dr Anne Purcell is a dispute resolution specialist focusing on the psychology of communication and conflict. She is founder and CEO of Resolution Partners, an innovative alternative to traditional mediation and dispute resolution services and training.
