MEDIA RELEASE: Wi Pere Mita named winner of the New Zealand Mediator of the Year.

Resolution Institute board member Wi Pere Mita has been named as the 2021 Mediator of the Year by the New Zealand Law awards. The awards ceremony was held online on Thursday 18 November.

Conferring the award on Wi Pere, the Judges' stated that he had displayed "Impressive community contribution and use of diverse skill-set to support under-privileged; Impressive focus of work, commitment and contribution to society.”

“I’m very humbled to have received this award and to stand next to the giants of legal and dispute resolution practice,” said Wi Pere Mita.

“The fact that the awards judges acknowledged the contribution to diversifying pathways for dispute resolution and the value that tikanga-based models of practice add to the profession is a win for both Māoridom and Aotearoa,” he said.

He also gave a huge personal and professional commitment to bringing tikanga and te ao Māori into the law and meeting Te Tiriti commitments in doing so. His impact over a range of organisations from the Justice Committee to ground roots community organisations and solid leadership brings meaningful change to the operation of the legal profession.

“I hope this will encourage other practitioners to promote and use tikanga-based models of practice and experience the huge impacts those models of practice can have on resolving disputes,” he said.
