Dispute resolution community mourns the passing of Sir Laurence Street
The passing of Sir Laurence Street has special significance for the community of dispute resolvers in Australia. Resolution Institute honours Sir Laurence as its Patron and Honorary Life Member for his contribution to the widespread use of mediation, arbitration and adjudication enabling more Australians access to justice.
Resolution Institute with more than 3,300 members comprising mediators, arbitrators and adjudicators, recalls with gratitude, the extraordinary influence over a period of more than 30 years during which Sir Laurence gained the acceptance of ADR among the judicial and wider legal community. As a pioneer in mediation, Sir Laurence’s booklet Mediation: A Practical Outline distilled the process of mediation and its underlying values and principles for a broad audience. Mediators, legal advisors and parties continue to find the Practical Outline a valuable ready reference and current mediators greatly appreciate the wise mentoring which Sir Laurence provided to so many. Resolution Institute values Sir Laurence for generosity in sharing his knowledge, expertise and insights with so many of our members at professional learning events.
Those of us in the dispute resolution community who knew him personally remember Sir Laurence for his warmth, his wit and his genuine interest in those around him.
Resolution Institute extends its sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Sir Laurence.
