Introduction to principles of the ‘transformative approach’ to mediation

A discussion of the basic concepts, fundamentals and premises of the ‘transformative approach’ to mediation.

This discussion will highlight differences between the transformative approach to mediation and other approaches to mediation : why these different choices were made, and what impact this has on both mediators and parties.

These premises can also be used as a lense through which dispute resolution practitioners can analyse and self-reflect on their own behaviours and attitudes towards their clients, and in conflictual situations in general.

About the speakers

Irvin Foster JD
Director, Catalyst IpF

Irvin Foster is the principle mediator and trainer for Catalyst IpF. An experienced certified mediator and trainer, he received a Juris Doctorate from Catholic University of America and did graduate work in Conflict Resolution at McGregor College, Antioch University.

Irvin is the former Executive Director of the Far East Community Services, Washington, D.C, Yellow Springs Community Mediation Center, Ohio, the Saint. Mary's Community Mediation Center, Maryland and the National Association for Community Mediation.

He is a certified Transformative Mediator and a former Special Education Mediator for the Ohio Department of Education. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation.

As a mediator, he has mediated a wide variety of individual, small group, large group and organizational matters. As a consultant, he has designed programs and training, written grants for mediation and conflict resolution providers and other non-profit agencies. He became a mediator in 1997, after 20 years in the legal profession.

Maëlle Noé
Conflict Competency Facilitator

Maëlle Noé has five years’ experience in the field of conflict transformation: training and coaching in conflict transformation skills, facilitating both inter and intra group dialogues, co-mediating, and launching peer-facilitated dialogue programs.

She has published and presented research about international-national staff relations in INGOs and about transformative mediation practitioners in ad-hoc dialogue space. Her clients have ranged in location from Northern America and Western Europe to East Africa, including organizations such as Search for Common Ground, Mercy Corps, Merry Year International, Fulbright Alumni Association, Le Petit Vélo Jaune, as well as individuals from a variety of professional backgrounds.

She was trained in the transformative approach to mediation by Catalyst IpF and the Dayton Mediation Center, has a Diplôme d’Université in mediation from IFOMENE, Paris, a Baccalaureate in Illustration from the University of the Arts London, a Masters in International Communication from American University, Washington D.C., a Masters in International Peace and Security, and completed complementary Masters classes in Social Psychology as the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
