Complete the Resolution Institute video assessment online to apply for mediation accreditation under the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS).

What is an online assessment?

An online assessment is a 1.5-2 hour mediation simulation conducted on Zoom, a video conferencing tool used to virtually facilitate mediation assessments. This means that anyone can participate in an assessment from any location.

The process is similar to a face-to-face video assessment - an assessment coordinator will facilitate the assessment by starting and recording the assessment. The coordinator will not be in the meeting room during the assessment, but will step in to assist as required.

How do I register?

We offer three session times for each video assessment date: 9.30am, 12pm and 2.30pm. Please indicate your preferred time in the registration form. Time slots will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. We will confirm the time of your assessment within 5 business days of receiving your registration.

How is the assessment conducted?

One week prior to your assessment, you will receive a confirmation email which contains a guide to online assessments, self-assessment form, role play scenario and Zoom meeting link. Prior to the assessment, you will be invited to run through the Zoom controls with the assessment coordinator.

There are two parts to your assessment:

  1. Role play: During the role play you will play the role of a mediator and volunteers play the role of the two parties in the simulated dispute on Zoom. The mediation session must be 1.5-2 hours long and will be recorded into the cloud.
  2. Self-assessment: Within 24 hours of finishing your assessment, you must respond to the questions in the self-assessment form, reflecting on what you think you did well and what you could have done better.

An independent assessor will consider the video recording of your role play and your self-assessment to determine whether you have 'demonstrated competency’ or have ‘not yet demonstrated competency’. Depending on assessor availability, you will be sent the results via email within 4-6 weeks.


Prerequisites

To be eligible to sit an assessment, you must have:

  • Completed a Resolution Institute mediation course, or
  • Applied to Resolution Institute to have your training recognised as having met the knowledge, skills and ethical understandings described by the national mediation accreditation system (NMAS) standards, as per Part II Section 2.2.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I access the online assessment?

    One week prior to your assessment, you will be sent a confirmation email which includes the Zoom meeting link to your online assessment.

  • What do I need on my computer or device to sit an online assessment?

    You will ideally need a computer or device with a camera and microphone and good Internet coverage. You must download and install Zoom.

    Internet connectivity

    • Join a Zoom test meeting to test your Internet connectivity.

    Sound

    • It is recommended that you use earphone or headphones instead of speakers to ensure the participants can hear you. Check that they are connected and the volume is turned on (where applicable).
    • You may also need to check the Audio Settings on Zoom once you have logged in.

  • What happens in the event of a technical failure?

    We take every care to ensure that the video assessment process is run efficiently and professionally. On rare occasions due to unforeseeable technical problems, the recording may fail. In this case, we will invite you to complete another video at no additional fee. Resolution Institute will make every effort to organise this at a time suitable to you.

    Zoom Help Centre

    If you require urgent assistance and are unable to reach the Resolution Institute office, please contact Zoom Help Centre and choose Free or Pro plan subscribers - Chat Live to begin the chat session. You will be required to provide the Meeting ID on your confirmation email. Zoom chat support is available 24/7.

  • What happens if I fail my assessment?

    You will be eligible to undertake subsequent assessments at a reduced fee of AU$489. To register for a subsequent assessment, please contact learning@resolution.institute.
