About the Online Workshop

The fourth in a series of online workshops revisiting the Diamond Model from Resolution Institute’s five day Mediation Training, this session is designed for those who are keen to hone their skills in focussed areas having recently completed their training or for those seeking an opportunity to refresh.

Session Outline:

In the option generation and negotiation stage the mediator facilitates sharing and development of options, followed by evaluation of those options, as a basis for developing an agreement. The mediator uses constructive and purposeful questions to help reality test options and alternatives supporting the parties to develop a workable and durable agreement.

Option Generation and Negotiation

  • role of the mediator - facilitating direct communication between the parties

  • questions that help parties share information

  • brainstorming options, ideas and combinations

  • evaluating options and alternatives

  • checking on future needs and interests

  • summarising and keeping track of progress

  • checking the options against the agenda

  • considering external factors - referencing standards, time, and other stakeholders

  • how to fine tune the detail for agreement

Wrap: Questions and Answers


Online Workshops: One and a half hour online workshops upskilling current practitioners via Zoom meetings. A maximum of 14 attendees are able to participate in a given workshop. The trainer and the participants will all be able to see each other and interact online. This new format will be delivered as ’bite sized chunks of learning’ with an opportunity for Q&A at the end of each.


About the presenter

Catherine Davidson

Catherine Davidson is a nationally accredited mediator (NMAS) and is certified by the International Mediation Institute (IMI). Catherine practised commercial litigation in London and Sydney. A mediator for 16 years, Catherine has mediated over 700 commercial and workplace disputes.

Catherine mediates under several industry schemes including the NSW Small Business Commission, Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (National Franchising Panel), and The NSW Farm Debt Mediation Act. She is also a panel mediator for the Australian Disputes Centre.

Catherine has mediated a broad range of workplace disputes in both the public and private sectors, including tertiary institutions, professional services firms and hospitals.

Catherine is a trainer for the Australian Disputes Centre Mediation Training Workshops in Australia and Asia, and has delivered negotiation and mediation workshops in a number of law schools in India and China.

Online Workshops are run using Zoom as our online platform.

  • How do I access the Online Workshop?

    You will receive the Zoom link in your registration confirmation email.

  • What do I need on my computer or device to take part in an Online Workshop?

    You will ideally need a computer or device with a camera and microphone and good Internet coverage. You will need to make sure that you can access ‘Zoom’ in your browser. You can download and install Zoom prior or as part of the process when you first click the Zoom link.
