Reality testing – (advanced mediation micro-skills online masterclass)

This is the third in a series of online masterclasses on advanced mediation micro-skills.

Reality testing is the objective evaluation of emotions and thoughts against real life. It is a method of assisting mediation clients to see a situation for what it really is rather than what the clients hope, wish or fear it might be.

During this Masterclass which includes 3 x 1.5 hour sessions we will explore what influences human beings’ analysis and decision making, and apply that understanding to maximise the value of reality testing in mediation.

Learning outcomes:

Session 1
Participants will hear about, consider and discuss:

  • Where reality testing came from
  • The purpose of reality testing
  • Its application in mediation
  • How human beings assess risk and make decisions

Session 2

Participants will hear about, consider and discuss the meaning and impact in reality testing of:

  • attribution error
  • bias
  • availability
  • anchoring
  • asymmetric attitudes

Session 3
Participants will hear about, consider, discuss and practice ways to apply a thorough risk analysis to ensure mediation parties can objectively evaluate their situation, and options, through robust reality testing.

Each session will offer a blend of theory, discussion and practice opportunities.

This online masterclass is targeted at dispute resolvers who have done mediation training, begun practice and are now seeking opportunities to enrich and enhance their theory, understanding and skill.

The timing of these sessions will be:

  • Wednesday 30 June 2021 (12 to 1.30pm)
  • Wednesday 7 July 2021 (12 to 1.30pm)
  • Wednesday 14 July 2021 (12 to 1.30pm)

The sessions will be run online utilizing a Zoom meeting platform with the trainer and participants all on screen. Participant numbers will be limited to 15 to enable interactive engagement.

Further advanced mediation micro-skills topics this year will include:

Questioning, framing and reframing
Private sessions
Managing emotions and difficult behaviour
