Intake (advanced mediation micro-skills online masterclass)

This is the first in a series of online masterclasses on advanced mediation micro-skills. It is a workshop style presentation and attendees will be able to interact and share experiences during the sessions.

Intake or pre-mediation meetings – laying the foundation for good mediation. During this masterclass, which includes 4 x 1.5 hour sessions, we will explore:

  • The purpose of the intake process and why it is important
  • Connecting with each party
  • Explaining the intake process to the parties
  • Questioning to understand the parties’ situation and positions
  • Ensuring you know the stories
  • Setting the scene – putting the parties at ease
  • Gaining trust
  • Overcoming party reluctance
  • Dealing with anger
  • Note taking v recording the intake
  • Detecting deception

Learning outcomes:

Session 1

During this session participants will hear about, consider, discuss and practice:

  • An overview of an intake process
  • Why is intake the foundation of a good mediation?
  • Setting up the intake session - location, timing etc
  • What does the mediator need from the process?
  • What does the party need from the process?
  • Pitfalls and how to avoid them
  • Overcoming objections
  • Note taking and recording the intake


Session 2

During this session participants will hear about, consider, discuss and practice:

  • Fast connection with the party to create rapport
  • Changing perspective
  • Gaining trust
  • The ‘Mum’ test


Session 3

During this session participants will hear about, consider, discuss and practice:

  • Drilling down on each step in the intake process
  • What do I bring to the mediation – prejudices and pre-existing views
  • Dealing with party’s possible prejudices


Session 4

During this session participants will hear about, consider, discuss and practice:

  • Detecting deceptive behaviour
  • Clever questioning – teasing out the correct story
  • Wrapping up the session

Each session will offer a blend of theory, discussion and practice opportunities, as well as post session work.

This online masterclass is targeted at dispute resolvers who have done mediation training, begun practice and are now seeking opportunities to enrich and enhance their theory, understanding and skill.

The timing of these sessions will be:

  • Wednesday March 17 (9.00 - 10.30am)
  • Wednesday March 24 (9.00 - 10.30am)
  • Wednesday March 31 (9.00 - 10.30am)
  • Wednesday April 7 (9.00 - 10.30am)


The sessions will be run online utilizing a Zoom meeting platform with the trainer and participants all on screen. Participant numbers will be limited to 15 to enable interactive engagement.

Private sessions
Managing emotions and difficult behaviour


About the trainer

Trevor Slater

Chief Operating Officer, Resolution Institute
Experienced commercial mediator, negotiator and trainer

Trevor Slater is a highly qualified and experienced commercial mediator, negotiator and experienced trainer. He holds a Masters’ Degree in Conflict Resolution from La Trobe University and a Diploma of Business – Frontline Management from the Australian Institute of Management.

Trevor has been an accredited mediator for well over 20 years and has undertaken hundreds of mediations across many areas of disputes. He strongly believes that intake or pre-mediation meetings set the foundation for a successful mediation. The skills he uses in intake sessions come from his studying many areas of human behaviour including NLP, mBIT and LSI Deception Detection as well as personal conversations.


Timing: Please note these sessions run from 9.00 - 10.30am NZ time.

Technology required: Zoom application, PC/laptop/tablet/smartphone, Internet connection, sound/speakers or a headset and an in-built microphone.

Online masterclasses are run using Zoom as our online platform.

  • How do I access the online masterclass?

    You will receive the Zoom link in your registration confirmation email.

  • What do I need on my computer or device to take part in an online masterclass?

    You will ideally need a computer or device with a camera and microphone and good Internet coverage. You will need to make sure that you can access ‘Zoom’ in your browser. You can download and install Zoom prior or as part of the process when you first click the Zoom link.
